I always thought from a young age; I would never suffer from mental illness. I was a bright and happy kid who always saw the positive things in life throughout my childhood. But, growing up and going through different situations can take a toll on your mind. About a year ago, I went to counseling and learned some valuable tips and tricks. Today I will share them with you, and hopefully, it’ll help you put your mind at rest.

These are the three tips that you should follow as best as you can, but don’t be distraught if you fail first.

  1. Acknowledge the thought and decide if it’s true or false.
  2. Think of positive influences and list off why you’re grateful for them
  3. Repeat positive messages

At first, some of these tips didn’t make sense to me, and I failed at them. Let me explain them to you, and hopefully, you can notice why they are helpful to anyone. Like I said, keep on attempting these tips, and they will become natural after a little bit of practice.

What do I mean by acknowledging the thought? By acknowledging that thought, you show that it doesn’t scare you and that you’re ready to face it head-on. Deciding the thought is true or false is the essential part of this tip. By saying and or thinking if it’s true or false, it helps take the thought off your mind and putting your mind at ease. I had a thought in the past that kept causing anxiety. But, once I finally acknowledged it and made the decision, it was false, the thought never gave me anxiety again.

The second tip might seem like common sense and pretty straightforward, but that’s not always the case. If you’re still putting yourself down or letting those negative thoughts sit in your mind, this will be the hardest of all the three tips. You need to do this whenever you have a negative thought, replace it with a positive one. After some practice and time, this will become natural, and some of your negative thoughts won’t affect you anymore. Honestly, the listing off positive things just lets you see the positive attributes in people more. It can help with trying to think of positive things and trying to replace those negative thoughts.

The third tip will be the easiest once you master the first two tips. All you need to do is think of a couple of positive messages. Such as “I am worth it” or “I can do this.” These positive messages will help you gain confidence while also replacing those negative thoughts. This step is here to heal your mind and take some weight off of it. If you keep on repeating and repeating these messages, then your brain will start to believe it.

If you follow these tips, you will soon notice some mental progress. Make sure you have patience and don’t give up if you fail first; it takes practice. Also, here’s a bonus tip. If your mental health starts to decline even more, please go and get help and talk to someone. Communicating has to be one of the best stress relieves and the most helpful. These are just a couple of techniques that many other people and I use to think positively. I wish you the best, and I know you can overcome your troubling mind, you can do this.
